International Men's Day

International Men's Day

International Men’s Day is celebrated on November 19th worldwide. The day is an annual observation to throw light at the contribution of men in bringing positive value to the world, their families and communities. On this day, discussions, campaigns, public seminars, etc are organized to raise awareness of men’s well being.

One of the six pillars of International Men’s Day is to improve gender relations and promote gender equality not only for men but for women too. In this light the theme for 2021 is “Better relations between men and women.”

Since 1999, International Men’s Day has been celebrated hosting public seminars, forums, conferences, festivals and fundraisers, classroom activities at schools, Movember fundraisers, Parliamentary speeches, government observances, radio and television programs, church observations, prayer meetings, award ceremonies, special retail promotions, photos and film competitions, music concerts and art displays, and peaceful awareness marches.

You can celebrate International Men’s Day 2021 by spending quality time with the men in your life, or your brother, father, boyfriend, and by telling how they enrich the lives of those around them.

Calls for an International Men’s Day have been noted since at least the 1960s, when many men were reported to have “have been agitating privately to make 23 February International Men’s Day, the equivalent of 8 March 8, which is International Women’s Day”. In the Soviet Union this day was The Red Army and Navy Day since 1992, which in 2002 was renamed to Defender of Fatherland Day. The date was informally viewed a male counterpart of Women’s Day (8 March) in some territories of the Union, however due to the day’s limited focus to historical events some countries of the former union have moved to adopt the more ‘male specific’ 19 November as International Men’s Day, including Belarus, Ukraine, Moldova, Russia and Georgia.

In 1968, the American journalist John P. Harris wrote an editorial in the Salina Journal highlighting a lack of balance in the Soviet system, which promoted an International Women’s Day for the female workers without promoting a corresponding a corresponding day for a male workers. Harris stated that although he did not begrudge Soviet women their March day of glory, its resulting gender inequality clearly exhibited a serious flaw in the communist system, which, “makes much of the equal rights it has given the sexes, but as it turns out, the women are much more equal than the men”.

Interesting calls for an International Men’s Day has been going on since at least the 1960s when it was reported in the New York Times, Feb 24, 1969, that “Many men have been agitating privately to make February 23 International Men’s Day, the equivalent of March 8, which is International Women’s day”.
