Bhai Dooj is a Hindu festival celebrated in the northern part of India. On this day, sisters pray for their brothers’ long lives. This festival falls on the second day of Shukla Paksha of Kartik month. The rituals are similar to Raksha Bandhan except, a rakhi, sisters put tilak on the forehead of their brothers, do the aarti and pray for their long lives.
Legend has it that as per the Hindu mythology after defeating the evil demon Narakasura, Lord Krishna paid a visit to his sister Subhadra who gave him a warm welcome with sweets and flowers she applied Tilak on his forehead with affection, it is also believed by some, that this is the origin of the festival and after that this sacred festival was established.
In the southern part of India, the festival is celebrated as
Yama Dwitiya. According to a famous chronicle from Indian mythology the god of
death, Yamraj gave his sister Yamuna a visit which later became the tradition
of Bhai dooj from that time. Yam and Yamuna were the children of Lord Sun,
after asking countless times to pay her a visit, Yam finally went to meet his
sister Yamuna. On this occasion, Yamuna made sure that her brother ate out of
her hands and after the meal she applied Tilak on his forehead and prayed for
his long life.
Seeing such affection from his sister, Yamraj gave her a boon to ask anything, Yami replied with a simple statement that she wanted her to see her brother like this every year and any sister who does this ritual shall not fear the God of death Yamraj. Pleased by the simplicity of his sister, Yamraj granted her wishes and from this day Yama Dwitiya picked up.
These hundreds of years-old tradition is still prevalent in Indian society and is celebrated with a lot of love.
The millennials have taken the festival to a different level and clicking selfies and making short videos has become a part of this day. Sending virtual greetings to long-distance brother sisters or treating sisters as brothers are certain changes of this new era.
